Запись данных на диск — дорогая и сравнительно медленная операция. Если бы база записывала каждое изменение сразу в файлы таблиц, она бы теряла производительность. Чтобы совместить скорость и надежность (буква D в ACID — Durability), PostgreSQL использует WAL (Write-Ahead Logging).
