Обычная функция идёт от начала до конца без пауз. suspend может остановиться на точке приостановки и потом продолжить с того же места, пока поток занят другим. Это не магия рантайма: компилятор Kotlin переписывает suspend fun в машину состояний с continuation — объектом, который помнит, как продолжить.
