После is Kotlin часто умно сужает тип без явного cast. В Java добавили pattern matching для instanceof — переменная в одном шаге — и sealed интерфейсы/классы (Java 17+), чтобы сужать типы похоже на sealed + when в Kotlin, хотя ощущения от кода разные.
