rm удаляет файлы; rm -r (-R) заходит в каталоги и удаляет содержимое. В отличие от корзины на рабочем столе, удаление сразу — восстановление только из резервных копий или специальными средствами. Считайте каждый rm необратимым, пока не доказано обратное.
