find обходит дерево каталогов в момент запроса — гибко, но на огромных дисках может быть дорого по I/O. locate ищет по заранее построенной базе — очень быстро по имени, но новые файлы могут не попасть в выдачу до обновления базы. find — когда нужны фильтры (тип, размер, время); locate — когда нужно быстро угадать имя на стабильной системе.
