У каждого файла три тройки прав: владелец, группа, остальные. Буквы r w x — чтение, запись, выполнение; для каталогов x — проход. chmod задаёт символический режим (u+rx) или восьмеричный (755). umask вычитает биты из режима создания по умолчанию.
