awk разбивает каждую строку на поля (по умолчанию пробелы) или по разделителю -F. $1 — первое поле, $2 — второе, $0 — вся строка. Это маленький язык: BEGIN и END выполняются до и после обхода; пары шаблон { действие } задают обработку строк.
